The Space

CPR – Center for Performance Research is located in The Greenbelt, an LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified green building, the first development of its kind in Brooklyn. CPR’s 4,000 square-foot, ground floor space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn houses two flexible studios, as well as CPR’s administrative offices. CPR sits at the nexus of several North Brooklyn neighborhoods including North Williamsburg, East Williamsburg, and Greenpoint.

CPR respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Lenape people. Specifically, we are on Canarsie (Canarsee) Land, a Brooklyn tribe of the Lenape people.

CPR’s Large Studio/Theater is a 1,875 square-foot flexible rehearsal and performance space, outfitted with an LED theatrical lighting system, full range sound, projectors, and marley-covered sprung wooden dance floor, and can seat up to 68 people. CPR’s Small Studio is a 675 square-foot space that functions as a rehearsal studio, gallery, and meeting space, and features a sprung wooden dance floor and a floor-to-ceiling storefront window looking out onto Manhattan Avenue. CPR is a fully ADA-compliant and accessible venue with two single occupancy, all gender restrooms and one wheelchair-accessible restroom. For more information about our studios, including a floor plan and tech specs, please visit the Spaces page.

CPR was co-founded in 2007 by choreographers Jonah Bokaer and John Jasperse to provide outstanding resources to performing artists and to foster the development, research, and presentation of new work. This commitment was met with innovative desire on the part of developer Derek Denckla/Propeller Group and architect Gregory Merryweather to design a mixed-use condominium that would house a nonprofit community arts facility on the ground floor, harnessing the vibrancy of the 2007 real estate market to support the local arts community. In 2009, John Jasperse Projects/Thin Man Dance, Inc. and Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation, Inc. co-purchased the space, giving CPR a permanent home.
